Man Faced With Possible 140 Years In Prison For Headstone Fraud
A Pennsylvania headstone salesman has been charged with defrauding hundreds of grieving customers across PA and New Jersey.
Gregory J. Stefan Jr., 54, of Upper Merion was arrested and charged with seven counts of wire fraud this past Tuesday.
Stefan Jr has allegations of committing fraud between January of 2018 all the way to September of 2023. He committed the acts through his business 1843 LLC and Colonial Memorials.
Investigators stated that his game plan was to develop contracts of the custom headstones and engraving services but never would deliver them on time, or if at all. Stefan would ask the majority of his customers to pay 100% of the payment up-front. When customers would contact Stefan to check on their orders, he would either ignore them completely or beat around the bush on where their headstone was.
Overall, the investigators calculated that Stefan failed to deliver or provide refunds for roughly 500 customers. Stefan made over 1.5 million dollars off of these customers.
If convicted, Stefan would face a maximum sentence of 140 years of imprisonment.
