The Trump administration is offering federal workers a buyout in efforts to reduce the current number of government employees.

An email went out to the federal workforce Tuesday evening, introducing the resignation program, offering federal employees up to eight months pay to resign from their current position.

The email tells workers that if they resign under this program, “you will retain all pay and benefits regardless of your daily workload and will be exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements until September 30, 2025 (or earlier if you choose to accelerate your resignation for any reason).”

This program effective January 28 and is available to all federal employees until February 6.

The federal government employed more than 3 million people as of November last year, accounting for nearly 2% of the nation’s entire workforce, according to Pew Research Center. The average work tenure for a federal employee is nearly 12 years, according to a Pew analysis.

According to sources, the White House believes that 5-10% of workers could accept the resignation offer, saving the Government an estimated $100 billion dollars.

Everett Kelley, National President of the American Federation of Government Employees, says that Trump putting policies into place that are creating toxicity within the government workforce, and it’s affecting Americans who aren’t apart of the government workforce.

“The number of civil servants hasn’t meaningfully changed since 1970, but there are more Americans than ever who rely on government services,” Kelley said. “Purging the federal government of dedicated career civil servants will have vast, unintended consequences that will cause chaos for the Americans who depend on a functioning federal government.”

“Between the flurry of anti-worker executive orders and policies, it is clear that the Trump administration’s goal is to turn the federal government into a toxic environment where workers cannot stay even if they want to,” he added.
