A Storied History

The Wanamaker Building, constructed in 1911, has long been a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s commercial scene. It housed the original Wanamaker’s Department Store, renowned for its grandeur and innovation. In 2006, Macy’s took over the space, maintaining its status as a premier shopping destination.

The Wanamaker Organ

One of the building’s most cherished features is the Wanamaker Organ, recognized as the world’s largest functional pipe organ. For decades, it has delighted visitors with its powerful performances, becoming a symbol of the city’s rich musical heritage.

Final Performances

Before the store’s closure, a special daylong concert featuring the Wanamaker Organ is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2025. Organists will offer free recitals every half-hour from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., providing attendees with a final opportunity to experience its majestic sounds within the iconic setting.

The fate of the Wanamaker Organ and other historic elements, such as the Grand Court Eagle statue, remains uncertain following the store’s closure. While the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ have cared for the instrument for over three decades, questions about its future accessibility persist.

Community Impact

The closure has elicited mixed reactions from the community. Shoppers have expressed disappointment over the loss of a beloved retail destination, with some criticizing the final sales as inadequate. City officials, however, view the closure as an opportunity for revitalization, aiming to transform the space to better serve the community’s evolving needs.

As Philadelphia bids farewell to this historic landmark, the legacy of the Wanamaker Building and its iconic organ will remain a cherished chapter in the city’s history.
